What are spider veins?

Spider veins, which commonly appear on the face and legs, are caused by the dilation of a small group of blood vessels near the surface of the skin. They often resemble red or purple sun-colored erythemas, or have a cobweb-like appearance and are more common in women.

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins occur due to enlarged and swollen blood vessels. The blood vessels may enlarge due to a weakening of the wall or valves of the vein. Being located in areas deeper in the skin than spider veins, they can appear elevated and often blue.

Varicose veins can be serious because they can be associated with the development of one or more of the following conditions:

Phlebitis. Inflammation of the vein

Thrombosis. This occurs when blood clots form in the enlarged vein.

Ulcers due to venous stasis. An ulcer is formed when there is no adequate drainage in the enlarged vein.

Although the exact causes of spider veins and varicose veins are unknown, pregnancy, heredity, prolonged standing, advanced age, weight gain, and hormonal changes appear to be contributing factors.

Treatment of varicose veins and spider veins

The specific treatment of varicose veins and spider veins will be determined by your doctor as follows:

Your age, general health and medical history

Gravity of the condition

Your tolerance to certain medications, procedures or therapies

Expectations regarding the evolution of the condition

Your opinion or preference

The treatment may include:

Sclerotherapy. This procedure involves the injection of a concentrated or specially developed saline solution into the varicose or vascular spider. The solution then hardens and causes the vein to close or disappear. The healthier blood vessels nearby absorb the flow of blood from the vein that disappeared.

Ambulatory phlebectomy. Ambulatory phlebectomy involves the removal of the vein by tiny punctures or incisions along the enlarged vein. Through these tiny holes, the surgeon uses a surgical hook to remove the varicose vein.

Electrodesiccation This procedure involves sealing the veins using an electric current.

Laser surgery and intense pulsed light therapy. Abnormal veins are destroyed by high intensity laser light or intense pulsed light.

Ligation and surgical extirpation. This procedure involves the surgeon making an incision in the skin and removing or attaching the blood vessel.

Possible complications associated with the treatment of varicose veins and spider veinsPossible complications associated with the treatment of varicose veins and spider veins may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Changes in pigmentation. Brown spots may appear near the treated area, and may take several months (or even up to a year) to disappear.

Allergic reaction and scars. Allergic reactions can occur to the injected chemical solution, as well as permanent scars.

Telangiectatic mat. This reaction produces the appearance of reddish and thin blood vessels near the treated area. The treatment of this condition may require more injections.

Blood clots. The treatment can cause the formation of blood clots in the veins.

Who are candidates for sclerotherapy?

Women and men of any age can be candidates for sclerotherapy, but most are between 30 and 60 years old. Spider veins are more common in women. Men have spider veins, but often do not consider them an aesthetic problem because veins are generally disguised thanks to the growth of hair on the leg.

Pregnant women or those who are breastfeeding should delay the treatment of sclerotherapy. In addition, it is not known how sclerosing solutions can affect breast milk.
