Varicose veins represent a pathological condition, they have undergone an expansion and consequently struggle to collect the peripheral blood of the legs and to direct it towards the heart. Today their treatment is minimally invasive, with multiple advantages; from outpatient execution, to the absence of post-operative pain, from local anesthesia to the immediate resumption of normal activities.
Dr. Giorgio Bitossi and Dr. Jean Daniel Rostan from the Center for Venous Surgery by Humanitas Cellini, who were guests at the studio in Filo directed on 7 Gold Telecity Torino, spoke about it.
"Venous disease is widespread, we estimate that 35-40% of people in the adult population over 35 years old, and it is a disease that grows with age, reaching a peak of 50% over fifty years.
Women are exposed more and risk three times more than men to develop varicose veins over time. Very often unfortunately varicose veins are considered a mere aesthetic disorder, but this is profoundly wrong: the venous disease left to itself is evolutionary and can worsen over time to reach very advanced pictures of leg disorders, with a significant social weight " , explains Dr Bitossi.
Why are women more affected?
"The disease affects women more for a genetic reason, linked to the transmission of disease, and for risk factors (pregnancies, some related habits such as a more sedentary life and poor eating habits). We must not forget that women are more attentive to the aesthetic aspect, a peculiarity that in the case of this disease can turn into a psychological and social problem: if a woman does not leave home anymore because her legs do not like them and they do bad, it tends to get lazy and to isolate itself with an important social weight, "explains Dr. Rostan.
Attention therefore to lifestyle: "Physical activity advisable to prevent disorders related to varicose veins is simple, just a half hour of walking a day, which stimulates the circulation," adds Dr. Bitossi.
Password mininvasiveness
"Intervention techniques today are minimally invasive and do not require cutting. Pain is reduced both during surgery and postoperatively, and the recovery of normal activities is immediate. The individual patient is the true center of treatment, so the treatment is calibrated based on each person's history, conditions and needs. The intervention is outpatient and lasts 15 minutes, to which a half-hour observation should be added to the intervention concluded ", explains Dr. Rostan.
"With these techniques we no longer have a surgical incision because, through a puncture with a vein needle, under ultrasound control, we can destroy the vein from within, for example through the laser. We can use local anesthesia along the course of the vein or even not use it, with other methods ", concludes Bitossi.
